Style Sheet

General Guidelines

  • Language: German or English. German texts according to the new German orthography.
  • Size: up to 50’000 signs (spaces, abstract, annotations and captions included).
  • Summary: Please introduce your text with a summary of up to 750 signs (spaces included).
  • Illustrations: The number of illustrations is not limited; but please use them in an appropriate proportion to the text.
  • For any further enquiries to language or size please contact the editors.

Formatting of Main Text

  • Please send the text as an attachment in a word format (*.doc or *.docx) .
  • Illustrations should be in jpg, gif or pgn format. Please include illustrations and captions at the desired place within the text.
  • Should the document extend to more than 5 MB, please send it via Dropbox and contact the editors (redaktion [a] dichtung-digital.org).
  • Title and headings: You may structure your paper with two levels of section headings („1“, „2“,… = first level; „1.1“, „1.2“,… = second level). Do not use special formatting for headings but use the same font (Arial 11) etc. as in your main text (see below). Add a line spacing before and after each heading.
  • formatting of main text: 
left-justification only;
 font: Arial 11;
spacing 1,5; use single inverted commas for emphasis, italics should be reserved for titles, literary works and technical terms.
  • Dashes/hyphens: Please distinguish between dashes and hyphens. Use n-dashes, on word programmes usually produced if you type: empty space – hyphen – empty space).
  • Quotations: Use double quotation marks for quotations, single quotation marks (inverted commas) for inside quotes:
    Example: In other words, “the unseen side is given to me as ‘visible from another standpoint’”
  • Use a new paragraph for longer quotations (running over 4 lines) and indent it on both sides.
  • Please do not use any other formatting: no hyphenation, no tabs, no automatic indentation, no CAPITALS for headings or emphasis, no spacing, no underlines (e.g. in internet addresses), no other fonts.

Notes, References and Bibliography

  • All notes should be rendered as endnotes.
  • Place the endnote numbers at the end of a clause or sentence, after the punctuation mark.
  • Each endnote text should end with a full stop.
  • References to sources or secondary literature: First references should be full (MLA format, see below), for further references to previously cited works use the shortened version: author’s last name + year of publication, page number.
  • bibliographical references:
Please give for archives and libraries the full data first (followed by the acronym or abbreviation you are going to use).
    Example: “Schweizerisches Literaturarchiv SLA Bern (hereinafter: SLAB)”.
  • How to cite books:
    Basic format: [author's last name], [first name (any subsequent authors' names appear in the first name, last name format)]. [Title of Book]. [Subtitle of Book] (in italics). [older works: year of first publication]. [Place of publication]: [Publisher], [year of publication]. [Medium of publication (e.g.: "Print" or "Web")].

    If more information is required, arrange it in the following order:

    1) Author’s name. 2) “Title of the part of the book.” 3) Title and subtitle of the book. 4) Original publication date. 5) Name of the editor or translator, prefaced by “Ed.” or “Trans.” 6) Number of edition used. 7) Number of volumes. 8) Name of the series 9) Place of publication: publisher, date. 10) page numbers (for parts of books). 11) Medium of Publication, e.g. ‘Print.’ or ‘Web.’

    Example: Dos Passos, John. Manhattan Transfer. 1925. London: Penguin, 1987. Print.

  • How to cite articles in magazines or newspapers:
         
    [author's last name], [first name (any subsequent authors' names appear in the first name, last name format)]. “[Title of Article]” (in quotation marks). [Title of Periodical, Magazine, Newspaper] (in italics) [Number or volume or Day Month Year]: [page numbers]. [medium of publication (e.g.: "Print")].         

    Example: Dasen, Pierre R. „Concrete Operational Development in Three Cultures.“     Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology vol. 6, no. 2, 1975: 156-172. Print.      

    Please always indicate the first and last page of the whole article. If necessary add “here p. XY” or “esp. p. XY”.

  • How to cite works in anthologies, collections or reference books:      
    [author's last name], [first name (any subsequent authors' names appear in the first name, last name format)]. “[Title of Text or Article]” (in quotation marks). [Title of Book] (in italics). Ed. [first name and last name of editor]. [Place of publication]: [Publisher], [year of publication]. [page numbers]. [medium of publication (e.g.: "Print")].            
    Example: Piaget, Jean. “Die intellektuelle Entwicklung im Jugend- und im Erwachsenenalter”. Soziale Struktur und Vernunft. Ed. Traugott Schöfthaler and Dietrich Goldschmidt. Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp 1984, p. 47–60. Print.      

    If you cite several texts from the same anthology, you may also use a shorter reference:             

    Example: Piaget, Jean. “Die intellektuelle Entwicklung im Jugend- und im Erwachsenenalter”. Schöfthaler/Goldschmidt 1984, p. 47–60. Print.

Illustrations and Captions


  • All illustrations have to be provided by the author. By submitting illustrations the author asserts that he or she is the owner of the copyright or has obtained the permission to publish it electronically. The author has to ascertain who the copyright owner is and to request the necessary permission.
  • Please add at the end of your text the necessary picture credits in this format: [Name and place of the institution or photographer]: [Ill. 1, 2 and 4].
  • Captions: 
Please supplement your caption with a reference in this format:
    [Number of illustration]. [First Name] [Last Name]: [Title of Work (in italics)], [date], [material], [size], [place where the work is kept]. 

Short Biography

  • Please attach to your contribution a short CV (up to 750 signs) with picture and with your mail- and e-mail address.
